Ayya Anandabodhi is co-founder of the Aloka Vihara Forest Monastery in Placerville, CA.

Mindy is a long time supporter of the nuns and co-founder of Friends of Aloka Vihara.

The Program

“I Will Not Pass Away….Reinstating the Buddha’s Vision of the Four-Fold Sangha” speaks about the history of Theravada Bhikkhunis (fully ordained Buddhist nuns) from the time of the Buddha until present day. It uses the Aloka Vihara Forest Monastery nuns as an example of a group of pioneering women who are helping to revive the lineage.

This part of the afternoon’s presentation is a colorful and informative overview of the history of the Buddha’s vision of the four-fold sangha.  Women were an integral part of this vision.  Due to war and resulting famine as well as political and cultural decisions, a strong female monastic presence disappeared for almost 1000 years in the Theravada tradition. The revival of the bhikkhuni sangha in this tradition began about 30 years ago. It continues to spread throughout the world.

In addition, “Going on Into the Struggle…”  is an overview of the state of the Bhikkhuni lineage in modern times. It will examine, through story and pictures, Bhikkhunis from around the world, their strength and service in the world and their struggle to survive. Come meet the Mahatheris and Theris who are reclaiming this ancient path given by the Buddha as a path to Awakening.
